Chang Jiang Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1#, Unit 2# Project –Sea Outfall Construction

Location: Chang Jiang, Hai Nan
Construction Period: July 2011 – October 2013
Project Profile:
The overall length of the outfall is 2260m. The scope of works included the precast and installation of 4 sections of 15m long culverts, 70 sections of 30m long culverts and 2 sections of 20m long culvert outfall heads.
Innovation:
(1) The underwater connection of culverts used spigot and socket type joint with groove and protrusion, and the gap at the jointing surface was sealed by rubber waterstop. This kind of connection had solved the ubiquitous problem existed in many power plants by that time, which water intake and outfalls are blocked by sands due to the gap unsealed at the connection joints.
(2) Use semi-submerged barge and pontoons to reduce the required heavy lifting capacity of the floating crane during the underwater installation of large structures.
