The wreck removal of “TRANS SUMMER”

On 26th August 2014, the 57,000t bulk carrier “Trans Summer” which sank for one year near the waters of Xiao Wan Shan Island has been integrally removed by Guangzhou Salvage. This project has set a new tonnage record for the bulk carrier’s integral wreck removal in the world which has become the biggest tonnage bulk carrier integral wreck removal project by far.

“TRANS SUMMER” is 189.99m long and 32.26m breadth, as the casualty is too large, when it lay on the seabed and buried by mud for 4m, the stbd side was still 2.5m above the water. “TRANS SUMMER” was loading 55000t nickel ore, the quantity of the cargo was much, the sunken state, which is heeled to stbd 104°, made the efficient discharging equipment useless.

The sunken location was in the mouth of Zhujiang River, which was the vital communication line of vessels. The 700t continuously spilling fuel oil formed severely threaten to the ocean environment especially the surround fishing yard. It will cause heavy loss to shipping, economy and ecology if this hidden peril has not excluded in time.

Integral wreck removal began on 11th Nov when the underwater survey and oil removing operation was completed. 4000t crane barge “HUA TIAN LONG”, 900t crane barge “NAN TIAN LONG”, 500t crane barge“NAN YANG” and the tugs “DE HUA”, “DE SHUN”, “DE GUAN”,“DE XIN”and more than 200 personnel were involved in the removal operation.
