Salvage of “YONG AN 4”

On the night of 3rd Aug,2006, the 50000t unloaded bulk carrier was grounded on the reef in the northeast of Shangchuan Island as the main engine was down and the strike of typhoon. The vessel is 190m long and 30m breadth, the engine room and NO.5 CH and NO.4 CH were seriously damaged and flooded.

On 4th Aug, GS send out “NAN TIAN SHUN”, “NAN TIAN ZHU”, “DE HUA”, “SUI JIU 204”,”SUI JIU TUO 30”, “SUI JIU YOU 2” for salvage operation successively.

Is was found by underwater survey that the aft tanks were seriously damaged and reefs broke in and loss buoyancy absolutely, the port and aft hull was closed to the island reef. As the casualty was grounded in unloaded condition, so it was not available to reduce grounding force by discharging, and also camel was not available as too many reefs in the aft, large crane could not come as the water was too shallow.

By detailed calculation, the salvage headquarter on site made an available entirely salvage plan.

By 18 days’ effort in day and night, the casualty was successfully sealed and balanced. During the high tide period on 22th and 23th, the casualty was pulled out by “DE YUE” and “DE HUA”. A pair of 800t camels were installed to provide buoyancy for the casualty immediately, and it was towed to shipyard for repairing before the strike of another typhoon.
