On 23th Dec of 2002, the Panama liquefied gas carrier laden 20400t gas suddenly fired in the hazardous article anchorage area in YAN TIAN port of Shen Zhen, the crews had to abandon the ship for survival. The fired vessel severely threatened people’s life and property in the surrounding area of Da Peng Wan in Shen Zhen and also the safety of Da Ya Wan nuclear plant. The State Council instructed the Ministry of Communication to arrange experienced experts to supervise salvage operation.
The tug “De YUE” and “De SHUN”of Guang Zhou Salvage rushed to the site in peril, on 26th the fire was put out by spraying seawater and foam. the casualty recovered to normal floating state from 18°stbd heeling after a series salvage operations. Finally the 20000t liquefied gas was discharged to her sister gas carrier and a major disaster was prevented successfully.
GS creatively combined ship control technology, construction safety technology, Atmospheric pressure liquefied gas safety detection and control technology and gas replacing technology together and achieved success, which has accumulated valuable experience for the salvage of ship carrying hazardous articles. It is indentified by the China Marine Association through the discuss on the salvage technology of fired liquefied gas carrier in 2006 that the technology use in the salvage of “GAZ POEM” was in the advanced level both at home and abroad by now.
