Integrated with road and subway sharing four-hole reinforced concrete structure at cross section, PearlRiver Tunnel was the first built immersed tunnel in China mainland. Total length of the project is about 1238 m, and the tunnel section is about 72l m long, consist of 457m long prefabricated immersed tube units, which is 33 meters wide ,8 m high, 120 m long. the tunnel longitudinal slope differ from 0.37% to 4.5% with a design vehicle speed of 50 km/h.
The project construction period was from November 1988 to early 1994. Guangzhou Salvage participated the construction of the project with innovated technology upon underwater works of the project:
1.the closure section was designed to placed between last tube unit and Cut & Cover, so that all the intermediate joints can be made as flexible joints. This technology set a valuable sample to solve closure joint problems at similar projects.
2. A innovated method of sand flow foundation is first applied at a 7-degrees seismic fortification area for this project, which effectively reducing settlement of the tunnel.
3. One-Floating-Crane method was effective for the accurate sinking and joint operation of tunnel units.
Since the tunnel opened to traffic, it keeps stable and watertight at a very safe and reliable operation status.
PearlRiver tunnel project is awarded of China Municipal Engineering Gold Award(1999), Guangdong Provincial Construction Committee of Municipal Engineering Quality Award(1999), Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award(1995) and Guangzhou scientific and technological Award(1995).President Jiang Zemin praised the quality of Pearl River tunnel when he visited.
